Employee evaluation
Some time back, I was reading some blog on employee evaluation and very quickly I became interested in that. I thought about it and came to conclusion that employee evaluation is a good carrot and stick tool if used with good appraisal management system. I have used this in my organization and really like the outcome because it starts with goals and objectives laid down with timeline by the employees. Employees and manager can then evaluate and appraise them accordingly.

Common wealth games 2010
Commonwealth Games 2010 in India has actually turned out good feed for writers, numerologists (read the article), astrologists who have now written and analyzed it extensively its scandalous and sordid affairs. But I have been more interested in it for its lesser known facts about the poor project management and improper employee and contractor schedule . Gaps were tremendous; employee scheduling should have their number one priority task because labor is not a shortage in India and if the employees and contractors had been scheduled properly for the various projects the situation for their over time would not have arrived at first place or would not have been so critical that now almost every project is running overtime. Poor employee and contractor time management led to uncontrolled expenses as well. The committe should have spent about 50% of time on management and planning of the various projects and rest 50% on execution. Proper project management and expense management would have been a good answer to all those corruption allegations on the committee. Actually even if they had taken bribes in all those handshakes but would have delivered the best and in time, I am sure even press would have also ignored all those handshakes.Failure to deliver what you promised is not forgiven easily! So wake up all the corporates take your project managers and management more seriously.

Happy Employees
It has been a constant endeavour of most employers to have not only satisfied employees but also happy employees.
Leaving the productivity and efficiency apart, happy employees help to maintain a time of wonderful cheer around. It is very important for an organization to have a test of happiness at the time of interview. Test of happiness is as important as an 'aptitude test' or a 'behaviourial test'. Happy people become happy employees. As a part f hiring process in our organization, I have tried to include several questions that gauge happiness level. Very simple questions like 'what can make you happy?" are a good start for happiness conversation. I have framed questions as I go - on the basis of the responses only. It is rigorous act; one response leading to the next question and so on. Generally people who gather pleasures from small things in life will remain happy in any given situation.

I believe happiness is transmitted by happy people only. It is infectious, Similarly unhappiness is highly contagious too.
Despite being extra cautious in making the right decision at the time of hiring, unhappy and stale people still penetrate in; what is the best way to handle them? I have struggled and have realized that something that an organization can help overcome employee unhappiness and to help generate positivity and happiness is by creating a happy environment. A positive environment will ensure people value their job and that will keep them satisfied. This will help to continue to keep workers productive, but at the same time help in creating a happy place to work. If the working environment is positive, then the workers will be positive as well. So ambience of the organization should reflect positivity and encouragement. Keep it lively and vibrant.
